The ENERGY STAR™ is a highly-recognized energy efficiency
standard that helps customers identify and take advantage of homes that
are exceptionally energy-efficient. ENERGY STAR™ qualification can be
achieved by integrating measures such as building envelope upgrades,
high performance windows, controlled air infiltration, high-efficiency
heating and air conditioning systems, air-tight duct work, and upgraded
water heating equipment. The Certification
ProcessSRE Home Energy Rating System Raters (HERS
Raters) conduct a plan analysis prior to construction to determine the
most cost-effective energy efficiency measures for the home. The HERS
rater inspects the home during construction and performs diagnostic
tests to analyze the home’s energy performance and determine its HERS
Index, which indicates how energy-efficient the home is compared to
other homes of similar size and construction. If the home meets the
minimum HERS Index (which is usually 15 percent higher than 2004
International Residential Code requirements), it is awarded the ENERGY
